Illegal immigration from Bangladesh has been national issue and also a major poll issue for BJP, with PM Narendra Modi raising it in several of his rallies. The Assam government had a pilot project in hand to update the NRC , since that updating of the NRC was agreed to in a tripartite meeting held between the Centre, the state government and the All Assam Students' Union in 2005.
The NRC, which was being updated earlier based on the 1951 electoral rolls, will now have to include names in the electoral rolls of 1966 and 1971 as well. The NRC is an exercise to maintain a record of the state's residents and the degree of influx from neighbouring Bangladesh.
However, the process was neglected on political concerns by the Congress governments and the Gogoi government delayed on different pretexts , even the state government failed to reply to the basic queries of the Register General of India .
The Centre's present guidelines said that the NRC will be updated to include names present in the 1951 NRC and in the electoral rolls of 1966 and 1971. But out of the 27 districts in the state, only six districts, Dhubri, Goalpara, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Karimganj and Hailakandi have the complete records of the 1951 NRC and electoral rolls of 1966 and 1971. The Centre released Rs 260 crore to the state for the project with a two-year deadline for completion.
Though the Assam government had earlier started a pilot project to update the NRC in Kamrup and Barpeta districts in 2010, as agreed to in 2005 and launched as a pilot in 2010 but it was allowed to run into rough weather due to violence and protests in Barpeta district by the All Assam Minorities Students' Union, which had resorted to vandalism in Barpeta .
INDIA HONEST is utmost worried with the behaviour of some Congress and other governments, when they have been found different tactics to delay, oppose and neglect the prime national security problem of Illegal immigration from Bangladesh, only for the sake of political gain through such anti nation , anti people measures.
Such acts are harming more to the nation and the people of states , because the state resources are hugely exhausted to meet the needs of such huge number of illegal immigration of Bangladeshi people , the number now runs in crores. The new governments must do something to stop this ,to do it fast to stop one big anti national conspiracy.
