Diwali is a festival restricted not just to Hindus but every Indian irrespective of their socio-cultural or religious identity celebrate it.
Diwali is the day of Lakshmi, when Rama returned to Ayodhya, the day when Pandavas returned from exile, when 16,000 women were liberated from Narkasura by Krishna and Satyabhama (mother ).


              
The day when Mahavira, the last Jain Tirthankara, attained nirvana. 
Emperor Ashoka renounced violence and embraced Dhamma on this day.

In the Sikh Dharma, the third Sikh Guru, Guru Amar Dhas made Sikhs should gather together on Deepavali and get the blessings of the Guru. It was also the day the foundation stone of Har-Mandir Sahib was laid.
It was also the day sixth Sikh Guru Hargovind humbled the Moghul tyrant Jahangir who had jailed him. He compelled the Mughal not only release himself from the jail, but also through the grace of Guru another 52 Hindu chieftains whom the tyrant had imprisoned.
It is also celebrated as the new year by Gujaratis, Marwaris and several other communities.
