The past few months have caused unimaginable stain on the good name that JNU had in the mind of most Indians. Although the ones who studied there knew that it is a hub of leftist politics, most people outside had a good perception about the university. Not anymore. But, it seems that the university is trying to improve its image by taking necessary action against students who indulged in anti-national activities.

इसी वर्ष 9 फरवरी को जेएनयू में कुछ छात्र संगठनों ने मिलकर अफज़ल गुरु की बरसी पर कार्यक्रम आयोजित किये थे। इस दौरान वहां देश-विरोधी नारे भी लगाये गए थे. इस पुरे मामले में कन्हैया कुमार, उमर खालिद सहित अन्य छात्रों पर देशद्रोह का मुक़दमा दर्ज कर के उनपर करवाई भी हुयी थी. फ़िलहाल वो सभी छात्र 6 महीने की जमानत पर रिहा हैं l

JNU has rusticated Umar Khalid, along with two other students for different duration. It has been somewhat lenient on Kanhaiya Kumar, who has been asked to pay a fine of Rs. 10000 for his involvement in the event organized to protest Afzal Guru’s hanging on the 9th February.
While Umar Khaled has been suspended for one semester, Anirban Bhattacharya has been rusticated till July 15. Another student Mujeeb Gattoo has been rusticated for two semesters. He has also been barred from pursuing any course in JNU for the next 5 years.
“Based on the report of the high-level committee which arrived at its conclusion based on depositions, perusal of video clips (provided by JNU Security and authenticated by forensic tests), and examination of documents on record, the university has decided to rusticate three students,” a senior university official told PTI.
“While Anirban Bhattacharya has been rusticated till 15 July, he will not be able to pursue any course or participate in any activity on campus for next five years, Umar Khalid has been rusticated for one semester and Mujeeb Gattoo for two semesters,” the official said. The official mentioned that financial penalty has been levied on a total of 14 students.

“As per the committee findings, application for holding this event ‘circumvented’ the ‘permission process’ and ‘the organisers disobeyed the instructions from the administration’ not to hold it and that amounted to ‘willful defiance’,” the JNU official said. With this, the committee did not find anyone from the administration guilty.
These decisions have been taken by the committee formed by the university to look into the 9th February event. It has also found ABVP member Saurabh Sharma guilty of blocking traffic on the day of the event. Saurabh Sharma had objected to the anti-national event and tried to stop it. He has been fined an amount of Rs. 20000. Aishwarya Adhikari has been fined the same amount. Her name was however not even mentioned in the report.
