Pakistan president Nawaz Sharif on US visit announced that he will demand US intervention in resolving the Kashmir issue, reminding that during his US visit in July 1999 amid Kargil conflict, he had clearly told then President Bill Clinton that if the US intervened, Kashmir issue could be resolved.
Pakistan state-run APP news agency quoted the prime minister as saying,"I told him if he spends 10 per cent of the time he was spending on Middle East, the Kashmir issue between the two countries would resolve,".
Sharif said India and Pakistan both were nuclear powers and the region was a nuclear flash point. He said that though India did not want such intervention, the world powers should get involved to resolve the issue. He said for the last 60 years both sides were entangled in an arms race.
He warned of the danger, when he said, "The situation can become dangerous. India has nuclear bomb, so do we; India develops missiles, so do we. There should be a limit to it. We all should think about it," .
The recent cease-fire violations, increase in of infiltration bids and Army chief Kayani's expected joining on one important strategic post in military on retirement , raises a curious anxiety in India, when the weak UPA government has failed to or unable to put its perspective on international or bi-lateral forum strongly.
India must be watchful of changing Pakistani motives, with an eye on the return of NATO forces from Afghanistan in 2014 and India's strategic interest in that region.
