More Skeleton (Maran in Aircel-Maxis deal) in UPA 2 Board

The CBI  charge sheet against former telecoms minister Dayanidhi Maran in the controversial Aircel-Maxis deal had drawn up enough evidence needed for a charge sheet.

This charge sheet is drawn despite incomplete information coming from Malaysia, but the CBI confirmed that the charge sheet is almost ready, and the Supreme Court would be apprised about the decision soon. The agency is to tell the court that it is still awaiting information from Malaysia on Maxis group, which might be included in the supplementary charge sheet.

The investigating agency CBI has opted to inform the SC about the charge sheet, with a confirmation that further requirements in the probe would also be conveyed to the court.

CBI said to the SC that during Maran’s tenure, "there was “deliberate delay” in providing letter of intent to Aircel’s former owner C Sivasankaran", though Maran has denied all these allegations against him.

The CBI investigations has revealed that Maran and his brother Kalanithi had allegedly received Rs 549 crore, in the garb of premium share investment in family controlled Sun Direct. This was given for their support role in the acquisition of Aircel by Malaysia-based Maxis.

The agency found that as telecoms minister Maran blocked the legitimate requests of Dishnet DSL, paving the way for the Maxis takeover and took the illegal gratification that was accepted by Dayanidhi through Kalanithi .

CBI had further said in the status report to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on telecoms, that  malafide considerations and an “illegal gratification” of Rs 549 crore were behind the “active intervention” of Dayanidhi and Kalanithi in curbing the business interests of Sivasankaran.
