Dynamoo blogger exposed the history of Somnath Bharti that runs back to a decade, when an outfit called TopSites LLC which was running a spam operation, and which was pestering webmasters to renew their listings in the Topsites directory, which was basically an unlicensed rip-off of the Open Directory Project in what was basically a business directory scam.
TopSites spamming operation picked up a partner in India called Somnath Bharti. India was an ideal place to send spam from because it had no anti-spam laws at the time (and is still very lax in this area), so the act of spamming by itself was not illegal.. although the act of selling paid directory listings when they were actually free is a lot more questionable.
Web Archives, aka Wayback Machine, which keeps record of old websites, has a snapshot of Bharti's website -- SomnathBharti.com -- in 2003. Taken on November 22, 2003, it exposes his link to Topsites.
In a message posted on the website, Bharti had asked visitors to send emails to somnath@2topsites.com or somnath@madgen.com. "Topsites probably made several million dollars through this (spam) operation," .
Topsites became so notorious that it found its way in the list of top 100 spammers maintained by the Register of Known Spam Operations (ROKSO), a reliable naming-and-shaming web listing. It named Bharti among three Indians cited for mass spamming. In fact, media reports dating back to 2005 listed him as a leading spammer.
Topsites no longer exists, but Bharti's name crops up in the staff list of a similar website called www.allwebhunt.com, a search engine and directory. It is hosted in India on the same server as — 119.82.71.132 — that hosts www.somnathbharti.com, the minister's official website.
Mr Bharti denied any involvement, but the copy of his business card made it pretty clear that he was lying. Bharti was listed in the Spamhaus ROKSO list which is basically a list of the world's worst spammers. An example of the spam can be found here, linking Topsites to Mr Bharti's Madgen Solutions.
The blogger didn't really pay much attention to Mr Bharti for a long time, although for a long time the blogger site was the number one result in Google for Somnath Bharti that irritated him, and since then Bharti moved from IT to become a lawyer.
The blogger confirmed that one thing is certain - Mr Bharti lied about his involvement with TopSites, as the blogger revealed the details of Bharti's connection, he sent a somewhat threatening email denying involvement but inadvertently confirming it at the same time.
