Kolkata: A man in his mid-thirties was allegedly smashed to death by his best friend after he declared his fondness for the latter’s sister. The incident was reported from the Hastings area in south Kolkata on Friday afternoon.
According to police, the accused, identified as Subhas Lal Jaiswala, had befriended the victim Md Ayub (32) sometime ago. Both were daily labourers and used to hang out together. On Friday, Ayub had been asking Jaiswala to have a word with him and the duo finally decided to talk over at 2.30pm.
According to DC (south) Murlidhar Sharma, when Ayub said that he liked Jaiswala’s sister, the latter picked up a piece of brick from the pavement and smashed the head of the victim with it. As Ayub collapsed, passers-by rushed him to SSKM Hospital. He was later declared dead by doctors in the evening.
The accused, though, showed little remorse and stayed rooted to the spot. Police have registered a murder case against the accused and are further investigating into the matter. This includes constructing the exact sequence of events. Family members of Jaiswala and Ayub have been asked to appear for questioning.
Police said that the accused often used to share food and drinks with Ayub. “We are probing if Jaiswala was under the influence of alcohol when he committed the crime. The very fact that the accused never even tried to warn the victim shows that either he acted out of haste or knew about Ayub’s intentions before hand and planned the murder accordingly,” said an officer. The post mortem of the deceased was later conducted at SSKM Hospital. The murder weapon has been recovered.
INDIA HONEST wonders if the intelligentsia in Bengal can visualise and understand how such a deep change has occurred in the mutual social relations and mutual acceptance between the two communities and that has resulted to the extent of deep distrust and hate; even resulting to hate-killing when the subject relates to one creation of social or of martial relationship.
If it is result of one sided attempt by one community to grab women of other community ? It needs critical social studies for the reasons and causes, mainly as related to social, economic conditions or to understand if it is the result of some biased political aggression by one particular community that is harming the maintenance of cordial relationship between the two major communities ?
