CBI gave a clean chit to Narendra Modi’s key aide Amit Shah in a fake encounter case, the agency put Mayawati in a legal bind in the poll season, saying it has evidence to prosecute the BSP chief in a disproportionate assets case.
As reported, in its status report in the Supreme Court, CBI gave details of “evidence against her’, leaving it to the apex court to decide on her fate. Sources said if the Supreme Court asked them to file a fresh FIR and investigate, they would look into it.
Earlier CBI had closed the case in October last year after the Supreme Court quashed the FIR in July 2012, but not for lack of evidence and now the CBI says, “We had, in fact, once sought prosecution sanction on the basis of evidence collected.”
It is big question for the Congress to justify its denial of the allegation on them for misusing CBI to hold blackmail their opponents.If the Supreme Court now asks CBI to re-investigate the case, it would also be a big blow to the BSP chief, who had breathed a sigh of relief after the court quashed the case in July 2012 and pulled up the CBI for exceeding its jurisdiction by lodging an FIR against her without any direction from it.
The apex court had asked the agency, why it had not lodged a fresh FIR in the case against Mayawati. While ordering quashing of the FIR, the Supreme Court had said the disproportionate assets case against Mayawati was ‘unwarranted’ and that the agency proceeded against the BSP leader without understanding its orders which were "confined to the Taj Corridor" case relating to the release of Rs 17 crore by the UP government, allegedly without sanction .
