"Who is a Hindu?"......Do the term Hindu denotes a particular religion ??..... No.
Many thousand years back, almost 8000 years by conservative estimate by the learned persons, there used to live a civilised, cultured, intelligent and wise people along the Bank of Saraswasti and Sindhu river basin.
Those wise people was enriched with much knowledge of science, literature, social system superior than some of the most modern knowledge and social system of present world.
Those people was insulated from alien influence and aggression in the North, West and East by high mountain range and the South by vast ocean. They enjoyed a life of peace and tranquility and as such was able to concentrate on developing an elevated life that was unmatched in every way from the rest of the population of the globe.
Alongside inventing many scientific way of life for physical comfort they also imbibed many spiritual knowledge and devised a particular 'way of life' that not only enriched their daily life but also elevated them in a much higher moral, ethical and Just life style. They documented those "Unique life style, way of living and thinking" that the present world is yet to achieve. That way of life is known as "Sanatani way of life".
After Saraswati river lost her flow in her upper stream to Yamuna river due to a massive Earthquake and started drying up in its lower stream, those ancient wise people migrated along Ganga , Yamuna, Narmada, Kaveri river basin and also concentrated along Sindhu river basin. There way of life continued in the same way, being guided by wise men and women who followed the well developed "Philosophy of Life".
The people who lived on the other side of mighty Sindhu river looked at these wise people, who came in contact with them, with much awe and called them "Hindu" as they could not pronounce Sindhu but Hindu.
Slowly with time the same barbaric people from the other side of the Sindhu river attacked those peace loving and non militarized people, who they called Hindu and called the land as Hindustan.
So, Hindu is a misnomer. Hinduism is actually a 'way of life' and not a 'way of worship' and this "Ism" contains certain principle, code of conduct for human life and such unique code of conduct is so enriched that no other human code of conduct can match it.
If one follow that code of conduct faithfully, only then and there he or she can claim that he/she is a Hindu or Sanatani. Otherwise he/she is a hypocrite like present days "Democrats, Communist and Secular etc".
It is not very easy to be a Hindu. It takes almost life long dedicated learning and earnest practice on daily basis to be a "Hindu". There is no other way to be a Hindu.---- "Nannya Pantha Bidyate Hayo naayo"--- there is no other way.
India Honest Hinduism is actually a 'way of life' and not a 'way of worship' and this "Ism" contains certain principle, code of conduct for human life and such unique code of conduct is so enriched that no other human code of conduct can match it..
